Everyone plans their Istria trip for July or August, and we get it – peak summer has its charm. But if you ask anyone on our team which month they’d actually pick for themselves, most of them will say September without hesitating.

The sea is still warm – often warmer than in June – but the air has lost that heavy midsummer heat that makes an afternoon bike ride feel like a bad idea. Mornings are crisp, afternoons are pleasant, and you can actually enjoy being outside all day instead of hiding in the shade between noon and five.

Cape Kamenjak empties out considerably once the school holidays end. The trails that were packed with bikes and beach chairs in August suddenly feel like your own private nature park – fewer people at the viewpoints, more parking, and none of the queueing that comes with peak season.

It’s also just a better month for anything active. Our e-bike and bike tours genuinely feel different in September – the group rides through the pine forest are cooler, the coastal viewpoints are calmer, and there’s usually a stop or two along the way for a laugh (yes, that includes a very random photo op with a life-size dinosaur statue tucked into the trail).

Kayaking, wing foiling, and e-foiling all get easier too – the wind patterns settle into something more predictable, and the water, without the constant churn of jet skis and speedboats, tends to be glassier and clearer than it was in July.

Availability also works in your favor. In peak season, our most popular tours – the cave kayak trip, the sunset paddles, the gastro bike ride – often book out days in advance. Come September, there’s usually more flexibility to just show up, ask what’s running that day, and join in without planning weeks ahead.

If you’ve been putting off a trip because you assumed the season was over, it isn’t – not for us, and not for the sea. September in Istria might just be the version of summer you didn’t know you were waiting for.

All our tours – kayak, bike, e-bike, wing foil, and e-foil – are still running through September. Explore all tours at jistra.com
