Stand on Cape Kamenjak’s shore on a summer afternoon and you’ll probably spot both: someone gliding silently above the water with no sail in sight, and someone else being pulled along by a colorful wing, foil lifting them just above the surface. They look similar from a distance, but they’re two completely different sports – and a lot of our guests ask which one they should try first.

An e-foil is an electric hydrofoil surfboard. There’s no wind, no wing, no waves required – just a quiet electric motor under the board and a handheld remote that controls your speed. You lie or kneel on the board to start, and once you’re comfortable, you stand up and control everything with your thumb. It’s the most beginner-friendly foiling sport there is, because the board does the powering for you – all you have to do is balance.

Wing foiling, on the other hand, uses an inflatable handheld wing that catches the wind, plus a foil board underneath you. You’re the engine’s throttle here in a sense – how you angle the wing and shift your weight is what gets you moving and eventually lifted above the water. It takes a bit more coordination to learn, since you’re managing the wing, your balance, and the wind all at once, but once it clicks, it feels incredibly free – no motor, no noise, just you and the wind.

So which one should you try first? If you want the fastest route to that “flying above the water” feeling with the least amount of falling, start with e-foil – most people are up and gliding within their first session, since there’s no wind or wing to manage. If you’re chasing a sport you can grow with long-term, and you don’t mind a steeper learning curve in exchange for that pure, engine-free feeling, wing foil is worth the extra patience.

There’s also the question of conditions. E-foil doesn’t care about wind at all – flat, calm mornings are actually ideal, since the motor does all the work regardless of weather. Wing foil needs at least some breeze to get going, so lessons are scheduled around the forecast. If you’re on a short trip and want a guaranteed session regardless of wind, e-foil is the safer bet to book in advance.

Honestly, a lot of our guests end up trying both over the course of a holiday – they’re different enough that one doesn’t spoil the other, and Cape Kamenjak’s calm, sheltered bays make it one of the easiest places in Croatia to learn either one. Both lessons start with a full safety briefing on land, all equipment included, and an instructor with you the whole time.

Still not sure? Come by and ask us in person – we’ll help you pick based on how much time you have, how comfortable you are in the water, and what kind of feeling you’re chasing.
